All the resources you need to deliver dynamic, cross-genre lessons

Here’s how Scope helps you achieve your most important language arts objectives:

  • 10 issues per year feature a wide range of nonfiction that’s packed with text features and cross-genre connections to give students the rich nonfiction reading experience recommended by the Common Core Standards.

  • A wide range of genres—finding texts with similar themes in different genres can be a time-consuming endeavor for busy teachers. That’s why Scope does all the work for you! Each issue features:

    • Thrilling Narrative Nonfiction paired with another genre like poetry, primary
source material, or first person stories, teach students to make meaningful connections across a variety of text types.

    • 8 pages of fiction in every issue require students to cite textual evidence, determine central themes, and analyze complex characters.

    • Paired Texts explore a topic or theme through two different genres —a poem and a newspaper article, an essay and a journal entry. Students make connections between the texts, compare and contrast, and draw key ideas from a wide range of genres.

    • Readers Theater Plays bring classic stories, myths, and historical events to life
and excite students about hard-to-teach genres and cross-curricular topics.

  • Debate/Essay Kit takes issues right out of students’ lives to engage them in persuasive writing activities that begin with finding main ideas and supporting evidence from a short nonfiction article.

  • Fun grammar activities challenge students to find and fix common middle-school errors involving word choice, punctuation, and sentence structure. These activities are designed to build grammar and revision skills.

  • Teacher’s Editions feature focused and easy-to-use language arts lesson plans with step-by-step instructions for teaching the featured skills, discussion and writing prompts, a guide to the accompanying online resources, and much more just for you.

  • FREE Online Language Arts Learning Package works with the magazine to help you deliver dynamic multimedia lessons using your whiteboard, projector, or classroom computer. Learn more.
